Modern Day Tribes Of Gay Men

leave a comment »

tribal-bearsI’ve long been enamored with the ancient and general notion of TRIBES – something that our homogenized, melting-pot, and modern American culture seemed hellbent on eradicating. But tribes are important, particularly as it applies to the LGBT and Gay community. We’ve long been a tribe of sexual renegades and deviants that’s finally (for good and bad) weaving into Mainstream culture and that’s good for monetary, social and political equality.

On other levels though, we’re losing our ‘difference’ in some ways. Tribes seem important to remind us of our uniqueness – and provide a narrower bit of common ground for individuals and interests even within our own subculture. Within the Gay men’s community, we saw a trend to revert and segment off back into tribal groups whether it was Leather Men, the Cowboy Dancing and Rodeo men, or ‘The Bears’ in general. Within that, there’s a sub-sub-culture: The Muscled Tribal Group of which I am so fond.

As such, I’ve been staking out various social and fitness tribe sites around the net – highly aligned with specific interests. The more sporting of which include topics such as the Bodybuilding, Muscle Bear Worship, Gay Wrestling, and MMA – Martial Arts Tribes to name a few. They’re specialized athletic endeavors and neo-tribal groups that a fit, Gay Bear man might want to be part of. For some it’s just about Fetish – Fantasy gear for play. Other’s enjoy engaging in these physically challenging and contact sports for health and recreational reasons. There’s a tribe for each.

The Speedo Bear Fashion Scene For Muscle Bears

leave a comment »

The hottest beach and poolside fashion for big, gay, Muscle Bear men has got to be a classic Speedo. Hairy, beefy and big-boned Bear men packed into tight Spandex Speedos – whether modestly in longer, jammer or boxer cuts or in classic Speedo bikini briefs – are in style this summer. Yeah, lotsa beefy guys wear ‘swim trunks’ but nothing says “confidence” like burly, hairy Speedo Bear.

Tiptoeing Amongst The Beauty Bears : In The Castro

leave a comment »

It took 30 years to get here. 54 actually, if you count the incubation and preparation time. But I finally made it to San Francisco, long after the Gold Rush, the ‘Free Love’ Hippy Era, and some sort of Gay Liberation Movement that decidedly happened here.

And so I’ve plunked myself in The Castro for a month and thensome. Really didn’t want to be a hit and run ‘tourist’ – but to stay long enough to get a real sense of my community and the neighborhood that exists in 2012. After the marches, after the sleaze, after the Mainstreaming and Gentrification.

My god, the men here, the Bears my god the Bears who can Break-Your-Heart just by lookin’ at ’em are everywhere. Most are younger than me, with far fewer grey whiskers – and I try not to get caught up in this land of The Beauty Bears : Alpha Males and B-List Bears vying for their attention.. Some are friendly, some untouchable – which they make so very clear…

Oh but still, I love the vibe – Gay and Fabulous – and Free Free Free as we were meant to be! And now I have to wonder what took me so long to get here. But I guess life has a way of putting you where you belong, when you belong there..

Bear Tribes : Bears In Kilts

leave a comment »

Been stumbling across alot of upkilt pictures of men in kilts lately. Love it. Decidedly an ongoing urban Gay fashion trend with lots of companies like Amerikilt, Cargokilts, Utilikilt and more taking the traditional Scottsman Bagpiper tartan kilt into a new Kilt Tribe of Modernism.

Best Beard Trimmer Kits : Beard Trimming Guides, Tips and Tools

leave a comment »

With winter coming on, beards are IN. Mens Beards are NOW. Beards are HOT. Well… Once you grow a beard in and can start to trim shape and style it.

I noticed over at my Manscaping and Body Groomer site that beyond body razors and shavers — beards, mustaches and goatees — and what facial hair clippers and trimmers are best for the job are high on their radar.

Of note, guys and Bears who keep and shape a full bushy beard really ought to go for a traditional AC home hair clipper set with plenty of long guides up to a full inch. Alternately those with ‘neat’ beards are more than happy with conventional beard and mustache trimmer sets with typically shorter maximum length settings.

The best goatee trimmers can be either – but getting and keeping a symetrical, clean, well-edged Goatee (and sideburns) is where an AC powered  fine-toothed T-Finisher or ‘edger’ is critical and a worthwhile long-term investment for precise lines. Oster, Andis and Wahl in particular offer the best barbershop quality T-Edgers with top-quality blades that will serve you well for years to come.

Many men will have their whisker grooming needs met by versatile cordless/rechargable kits with swappable nose, ear heads, snap-on guide combs, perhaps mult-blade options. But all of these have rather lightweight, less than precision blades that won’t hold up well for years to come. Norelco, Philips, and – (my least favorite) Conair – just don’t have the build quality to last for years – nor the sheer HORSEPOWER you’ll get from a corded, AC powered clipper-trimmer.
